Wildcats Drop Series Finale to Alabama State

Daytona Beach, Fla.  – The Wildcats could not finish off a second SWAC sweep Sunday as they fell to Alabama State, 6-3, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

How It Happened

The Wildcats (10-13, 5-1 SWAC) threatened out of the gate, putting two men on with back-to-back walks in the first, but a double play ended the threat.

Alabama State (12-12, 4-2 SWAC) loaded the bases in the fourth, but Vazquez kept the game scoreless with a punchout.

A double play ball from Manny Souffrain brought the first run around to score as Christopher Patterson crossed the plate. With two outs in the inning, Brian Perez continued his hot streak with a double to right center. He came around to score on an RBI single from Franki Febles to make it 2-0, Wildcats.

The Hornets took the lead in the sixth with four runs – three unearned - on three hits and a pair of Wildcat errors.

A one-out double from Malik Stephens turned into the Wildcats' third run of the afternoon after an RBI double from Patterson in the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats put runners on second and third in the inning but couldn't scratch them across.

Alabama State put the game away in the top of the ninth with two more runs to finish off the 6-3 win.

"We've got some things to clean up – Timely hitting and defensively," Wildcats head coach Jonathan Hernandez said after the game. "They're things we've got to get cleaned up if we want to make a run at this thing."

Vazquez took the loss. He went six innings, allowing five hits and four runs – only one earned – with a walk and five strikeouts.

Gabriel Perez picked up for Vazquez in the seventh. He pitched three innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits and one walk.

With two SWAC series in the rearview, Coach Hernandez gave his thoughts on the state of his team.

"I think we're fine," Hernandez said. "We didn't get the sweep today but we got the series win. That's what's most important – winning on the weekends. We'll learn from today, build on it, and get ready for another big series at Mississippi Valley State next weekend."
