Stetson Avoids Sweep by B-CU With 7-3 Win

DeLand, Fla. – The Wildcats struck early but could not hold on as Stetson avoided the season sweep with a 7-3 win, Tuesday night in DeLand, Fla.

How It Happened

The Wildcats (13-19, 7-5 SWAC) jumped in front early in the first, capitalizing on a Stetson (17-15, 4-8 ASUN) starter who had not made a start since 2020. The first three Wildcats to take the plate took walks and Boris Peña brought a pair home with a single through the right side.

The Wildcats re-loaded the bases with another walk, and Malik Stephens watched ball four to tack on another run that made it 3-0, B-CU, in the first.

The Hatters challenged in the bottom half of the inning, but an unsuccessful steal of home kept Stetson scoreless.

Stetson loaded the bases in the second and third innings but left them that way both times.

Stetson finally broke through in the fourth with an RBI triple and a single that made it 3-2.

Stetson broke things open in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on a hit, a pair of wild pitches, and a fielder's choice to make it 6-3.

Stetson brought another run home in the eighth on another fielder's choice to make it 7-3 and that would be all

"We deviated a bit from our approach tonight," Wildcats head coach Jonathan Hernandez said after the game. "We'll take what positives there are from tonight and carry that into a big series this weekend."

Marcos Gamboa made the start. He finished two innings, allowing no runs on three hits and three walks with a strikeout.

Gabriel Perez took over on the bump to start the third. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Amir Asghar took an inning, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks and took the loss. Gabriel White allowed a pair of runs on a hit with a strikeout in an inning.

Derrius York and Bryan Pina finished off the night for the B-CU pen.

Notes
  • B-CU left 7 men on base.
  • The Wildcats struck out 15 times in the game, tying a season-high.
  • Brian Perez extended his on-base streak to 17 games, Matthew Garcia's reaches 16.
