Daytona Beach, Fla. – A seventh-inning collapse doomed the Wildcats hopes Friday afternoon as they fell, 12-2 to Mississippi Valley State in seven innings.
How It Happened
The Wildcats (16-21, 10-6 SWAC) scored a pair in the second to open the afternoon.
Gaylen Rutledge grounded out, scoring Boris Peña, and
Brian Perez came around to score on a balk to make it 2-0.
Mississippi Valley State (10-15-1, 4-10 SWAC) used some small ball of its own to cut the lead in half on a groundout in the third.
MVSU took the lead in the top of the fifth, adding two runs on two hits and three walks to take the 3-2 lead and chase the starter
Louis Lipthratt.
MVSU put nine two-out runs on the board in the top of the seventh, batting around runs on four hits, six walks, and a hit-by-pitch to break things open and end things, 12-2, on the SWAC's 10-run rule.
"Disappointing loss," Wildcats head coach
Jonathan Hernandez said after the game. "We created offense for them and shot ourselves in the foot all afternoon."
"That's the beauty of baseball," Hernandez continued, "We get another opportunity tomorrow. We'll come out ready to play with a chance to tie this thing up tomorrow."
Lipthratt started and took the loss, his third of the season, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks with one strikeout.
Notes
- Brian Perez extended his on-base streak to 22 games after a walk and a base hit
- Matthew Garcia's on-base streak reaches 21 with a double today.
