Gulfport, Miss. – Back-to-back homers in the top of the seventh squashed the B-CU comeback as the Wildcats fell, 5-3 to Prairie View A&M, Wednesday night at the Gulfport Sportsplex.
How It Happened
The Wildcats wasted no time cracking the scoreboard Wednesday night.
Haley Parks led off the top of the first with a walk. She advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single from
Joslynn Davis to make it 1-0, B-CU.
Prairie View A&M tied the game in the top of the third on a two-out RBI single to center.
The Panthers opened the top of the fourth with a single and a walk. The Wildcats had a chance to take out a runner at the plate, but the throw went high, and the Panthers took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single.
Parks opened the sixth with a hit-by-pitch.
Carrington Robinson followed, legging out a bunt single to put runners on first and second with one out. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third with one out.
Briana Paysinger sent a deep fly ball into left center, scoring Parks.
Desirae Martinez put the Wildcats in front, 3-2, driving in Robinson with a single that soared just over the infield and into right field.
The Panthers rallied in the seventh, putting a runner on base with two outs. A home run to right put PVAMU on top, 4-3. A solo shot by the next batter pushed the lead to 5-3.
Halyne Gonzalez made the start. She threw three innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Hannah Ortega took over in the fourth. She allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Who's Next?
The Wildcats will now prepare for a rematch with Tuesday night's foe, Southern. That game is set for Thursday, May 12 at 12:30 p.m. EST.
A loss knocks the Wildcats from the tournament. Should B-CU prevail, they will have to play a double-header Thursday, taking on the winner of Jackson State and Texas Southern. That game is set for 5:30 p.m. EST.
