Daytona Beach, Fla. – A big third inning for the Knights was all they needed to defeat the Wildcats in a weather-shortened midweek finale, Tuesday night in Orlando.
How It Happened
Wildcats (22-29, 16-10 SWAC) scored out of the gate as
Malik Stephens picked up right where he left off last weekend with a leadoff double out of the gate. He came around to score after a pair of groundouts.
Christopher Patterson got the RBI.
UCF (30-22, 13-8 AAC) tied things up quickly with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. They took the lead two innings later with a pair of three-run shots in the bottom of the third that made it 7-1.
The Wildcats grabbed a run back in the fourth when
Manny Souffrain sent a ball deep to right field for his first homer of the season that made it 7-2.
The Knights answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing their lead to 10-2 on a wild pitch and an RBI single.
The agme was called during the bottom of the fifth inning after intense storms and lightning drifted over Orlando.
Alec Mendez made the start. He went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs – only one earned – on three hits, four walks, and four strikeouts.
Marcos Gamboa and
Gabriel White rounded up the night before the game was called due to inclement weather.
Notes
- Malik Stephens has reached base safely in 22 straight games after a double tonight. He ties Matthew Garcia for the longest such streak of the season.
- Stephens is six for his last fifteen at the plate with eight RBI, two homers, four doubles, and three runs scored. He is slugging over 1.000 in that stretch.
- The rainout snaps Christopher Patterson's 11-game hitting streak, which ties the longest stretch of the season by a Wildcats
