Birmingham, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman's 2022 baseball season comes to an end in the SWAC Tournament semifinals as the Wildcats fall to Alabama State, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Regions Field.
How it Happened
Alabama State took an early lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-run homer to right center field.
The Wildcats cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third as
Matthew Garcia doubled home
Jan Reyes from second to make it 2-1.
The Hornets pushed their lead back to two with a solo shot in the top of the third. They grabbed another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
The Wildcats scattered eight hits in the contest, but nothing quite came together as they fell, 4-1, ending their season.
Alec Mendez made the start. He allowed two runs on the homer, two hits, and three hit batters – he struck out two.
Gabriel Perez,
Dale Michaud, and
Amir Asghar held things down in the pen, keeping the Wildcats close with six combines strikeouts.
Notes
- Matthew Garcia finishes the season with hits in ten straight games. He registered multiple hits in nine of his last 13 games.
- Christopher Patterson and Jan Reyes each recorded two hits.
- The Wildcats left six men on base – the Hornets left ten.
- The Wildcats pitching staff struck out nine Hornets in the game.
