SWAC Baseball Tournament Heads to Atlanta

End-of-year tournament has new venue

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It has been announced that the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament will be housed at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. The annual end-of-year tournament is scheduled for May 24-28.

"We're extremely excited to host our upcoming baseball tournament in the City of Atlanta," said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland. "Aside from what we envision being an extremely exciting and competitive baseball tournament, the City of Atlanta undoubtedly will offer our fans and supporters a wide variety of leisure and recreational activities, restaurants, and hotel accommodations."

Under the direction of Jonathan Hernandez, set to embark upon his fifth year at the helm in Daytona Beach (and his fourth competitive season as head coach), Bethune-Cookman Baseball will play a total of 56 regular season games in 2023, including 30 of those contests in Daytona Beach. It will be the program's second year competing in the SWAC, having won 19 titles in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). In 2017, the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Gainesville [Fla.] Regional final against the eventual College World Series (CWS) champion Florida Gators.

Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium has been the home of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for almost 90 years. As recently as 2014-15, the stadium underwent a $4.5 million renovation and expansion. The project was designed to equip the Yellow Jackets with the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art facility in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

At a current capacity of 3,718, Georgia Tech's baseball facility more than doubled in size when the renovations were complete in 2002. Mac Nease Baseball Park features approximately 1,100 chair-back seats behind the home plate area in addition to more than 2,500 bleacher seats.

Mac Nease Baseball Park is the only college baseball facility in the country to be been named "Field of the Year" by the Sports Turf Managers Association three times. Mac Nease Baseball Park remains the only baseball stadium in the Atlantic Coast Conference to have earned the honor, taking the crown in 2008, 2014 and 2019.

Bethune-Cookman opens the season with 11 of its first 12 games at the friendly confines of venerable Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Wildcats begin the campaign with a three-game homestand versus Lehigh on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
