DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Down 18-7 in the first quarter, Bethune-Cookman rallied to take down Iona behind 24 points from
Chanelle McDonald.
Iona (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) jumped in front early on 6-15 shooting with a pair of threes in the first quarter of play. The Gaels held B-CU at just one point through over six minutes of play before McDonald broke the funk with a layup.
The Wildcats (1-2, 0-0 SWAC) reset in the second scoring 21 on a 9-15 clip to pull to within six as the two teams hit the break. Back-to-back jumpers by
Camerah Langston made it 34-28 after two.
Four minutes into the third,
Kerrighan Dunn cut the deficit to just three on a jump shot that made it 37-34, but Iona battled to keep the lead at seven heading into the game's final frame.
The fourth quarter was all B-CU. McDonald's jumper in the paint brought the Wildcats to within one with just under six minutes to play, capping off four straight B-CU buckets that made it 58-57.
Dunn put B-CU in front for the first time in the game with a layup that made it 59-58, but Iona held on for a 65-65 tie as the clocks hit double zeroes.
Overtime saw neither team sink back-to-back baskets until McDonald and Wilson scored on consecutive trips. The B-CU defense kept Iona scoreless in the final minute of the game, while a free throw from
Karianna Woods iced the game at 74-72.
- Chanell Wilson led the Wildcats with 24 points on 9-17 shooting and 6-7 at the charity stripe. She led B-CU with 10 rebounds, nine of them offensive.
- Chanel Wilson added 19 with eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
- O'Mariyah Tucker blocked three shots.
- B-CU racked up 26 second-chance points and 17 points off of turnovers.
