ORANGEBURG, SC – Bethune-Cookman picked up their first road win of the season as they defeated South Carolina State 80-71.
Jakobi Heady and
Zion Harmon lead the way for the WIldcats as they start their five-game road trip strong.
B-CU (5-4) got off to a quick start as they began the first half with a 9-2 scoring run. Senior forward
Derrick Carter-Hollinger Jr. contributed five early points, including a three-pointer, while the Wildcats forced three turnovers during that span.
South Carolina State (2-8) was able to quickly recover and successfully tie the game at 15 following a made free-throw from James Morrow. The Bulldogs then took a 4-point lead with 10:21 left in the half.
The Wildcats took the lead back with 9:41 left following a three-pointer by
Dhashon Dyson. B-CU would not relinquish the lead as they would go on a 22-11 run to end the period.
The WIldcats kept up the intensity in the second half as they maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the contest. B-CU went up by 20 points with 7:21 left after a jumper by John Henderson Jr. which was their largest lead of the game.
Elijah Hulsewe would increase the lead back to 20 with 5:04 left in the game.
Jakobi Heady and
Zion Harmon each had strong games against the Bulldogs. Heady finished with 20 points, making three of his five three-point attempts. He also had a team-leading eight rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Harmon, for his part, scored 18 points. He had a modest shooting night (6/17) but was able to make all five of his free throws while also picking up four assists and four steals.
The WIldcats won the turnover differential by a significant margin. They gave the ball away just nine times compared to 18 for the Bulldogs. SCSU was the superior rebounding team, but B-CU was able to hold them to just 34% shooting on the afternoon.
Bethune-Cookman gets a week off before their next game of the road trip. They will take on the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on December 16th.
