MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Three Wildcats scored in double figures Monday evening to help lead Bethune-Cookman to a 70-65 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road win in men's basketball at Alabama State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. With the win, the Cats completed a season sweep of the Hornets having beaten them at Moore Gymnasium back on January 28.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (10-18, 6-9 SWAC) was clinging to a 21-20 lead with 6:41 remaining in the first half when
Dhashon Dyson took a pass from the defensive end of the court and raced towards his own basket for a fastbreak layup that kick-started a 15-9 run for the visiting Wildcats the rest of the way in the opening half of play. In fact, Dyson – a junior guard from Chicago, scored seven consecutive points for the Maroon and Gold during the run.
Â
Marcus Garrett,
Kevin Davis and
Zion Harmon would get in on the scoring to help lift the visitors to a 36-29 advantage as the two teams headed towards their respective locker rooms at the half.
Â
In the second half, Alabama State (8-20, 6-9) used the outside shooting touch of Antonio Madlock to run out to a quick 10-0 run to give the host Hornets a 39-36 lead under three minutes in.
Â
The Maroon and Gold fought back with Davis and Dyson at the free throw line, while Garrett posted a jumper from just outside the paint to push BCU back in front at 45-43.
Â
Despite several ASU attempts to rally using a three-pointer from Roland McCoy and timely shots from Madlock, the Wildcats would never surrender the lead the rest of the way.
Â
It would be Davis and Dyson combining to score the final 20 points of the game for the Maroon and Gold, lifting their side to the road win – the first of its kind since defeating Prairie View A&M in Texas on February 4.
Â
For the game, Bethune-Cookman shot 33 percent from beyond the arc, as well as 48 percent from the field.
Â
Defensively, the Cats held the Hornets to just 3-of-12 from three-point range in the second half.
Â
Madlock finished with a team-high 19 points for the Hornets, including three (3) three-pointers. McCoy and Jordan O'Neal each tallied 14 points, while Duane Posey scored 10.
Â
For BCU, it was Dyson leading the scoring with a game-high 20 points, followed closely by Davis' 19-point performance to go along with his 10 rebounds. Garrett supplied the Cats with 10 points and five assists.
Â
Up next, Bethune-Cookman returns home to host Southern (La.) in a pivotal SWAC showdown on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m., in a game to be carried on HBCU Go.
