DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Andrew Sundean was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Drew Faurot registered his fourth home run of the season Tuesday evening in powering UCF past Bethune-Cookman 9-0 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Â
UCF (7-1) scored runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, respectfully, to open an early pitcher's duel.
Â
Knights shortstop Drew Faurot collected his fourth home run of the young season with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth. UCF added another run in the frame courtesy an Andrew Brait sacrifice fly to center field that plated designated hitter Andrew Sundean from third.
Â
With UCF up 2-0 in the fifth, the Knights used a Sundean RBI single to left in order to score Ben McCabe, while the Knights third baseman recorded an RBI double earlier in the inning when he scored Tom Josten to advance the UCF lead at 4-0.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (6-3) got its only hit of the game in the home-half of the fifth when
Robert Moya singled to begin the at-bat.
Â
The Wildcats would leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning after Moya posted a fielder's choice that saw the Knights erase the threat with the force out of designated hitter
Manny Souffrain at second. The Maroon and Gold once again had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, but UCF reliever Zach Chappell was able to get Souffrain to strike out looking to end the inning.
Â
UCF plated four runs in the top of the ninth for the eventual 9-0 final score.
Â
The win went to Dominic Castellano (1-0) out of the bullpen, as he worked 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Knights starting pitcher Najer Victor went three strong innings with five strikeouts and a walk despite not factoring into the decision. The loss was recorded by BCU starting pitcher
Pablo Torres (0-1) as he went three innings on the bump, giving up two runs on four hits, two walks and collecting four strikeouts.
Â
The Knights were led at the dish by Sundean's 3-for-5 effort with an RBI and a run scored. Faurot was 2-for-4 which included his home run. And it was McCabe recording a multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 effort at the dish adding two RBIs and two runs.
Â
BCU was led by Moya with the lone hit of the night for the Cats.
