ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Junior transfer
Katie Robinson wasted little time settling herself into the storied history of Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf on Friday, powering the Wildcats to a head-to-head duel victory over Savannah State at Riviera Country Club.
The Wildcats and Tigers faced off in the season opener for both programs over the course of 36 holes on Thursday and Friday, with BCU claiming the victory. Bethune-Cookman (331-318=649) topped visiting Savannah State (359-374=733) in the first-ever competitive fixture for BCU at Riviera Country Club, as well as the first-ever meeting between the two schools in a head-to-head duel event.
Katie Robinson, a junior transfer from Alabama State, began her Maroon and Gold career with a two-round low score for the Wildcats. The American Canyon, California native fired an opening round 8-over 80, before bouncing back with a final round 4-over 76 on Friday afternoon. She carded a 156 (+12) across her 36 holes of action.
Sophomore
Skylar Kew, finishing third on the BCU squad for season average in her rookie campaign, finished second in the field of 10 in her first event of the new season. The Dundas, Ontario product fired rounds of 78 and 80, respectively, en route to a 158 (+14) score on the final leaderboard.
Another of Head Coach
Christopher Stokes' newcomers to the 2023-24 roster,
Jenna Werler – a graduate transfer from Coker College in South Carolina, turned in an opening round 82, before regrouping for a 5-over 77 card across her final 18 holes. She would finish the event with a 159 (+15).
Savannah State's duo Jada McCallum (88-81=169, +25) and Miracle Goolsby (84-91=175, +31) went four and five on the leaderboard, respectively, for the Tigers in finishing as the team's low scorers.
BCU freshman
Meeya Marquez of Sherman Oaks, California – playing golf competitively for just under five years, finished her first-ever collegiate event with rounds of 91 and 85. That allowed her to card a collective 176 (+32) for the Wildcats.
And it was Wildcats sophomore
Jordan Davis, having produced season-low scores in her final two rounds of the 2022-23 campaign during the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship in Flowood, Mississippi, continuing to improve with a two-round 220 (114-106) – a new career-best for the St. Petersburg, Florida native for any two opening rounds of an event.
The Wildcats continue the fall portion of their schedule when traveling to participate in the Rocket Classic hosted by the University of Toledo in Port Clinton, Ohio. The two-day, 54-hole event begins Monday, Oct. 9.
