FORT MYERS, Fla.- A fourth inning grand slam put things out of reach as the Wildcats dropped game two against Florida Gulf Coast, 10-3, Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
The Wildcats (3-3, 0-0 SWAC) put two runners on out of the gate with a
Manny Souffrain walk and
Jorge Gonzalez Febo double, but nothing came of it in the first.
FGCU (2-4, 0-0 ASUN) opened the scoring early with two runs in the bottom of the inning after three straight one-out singles. The Eagles plated one more on a Jake McKee RBI single to second, but B-CU limited more damage as a great relay play from center field cut down Harrison Povey at the plate.
Two more hits in the second resulted in two more runs for the Eagles, as a pair of RBI doubles made it 4-0.
B-CU got on the board in the third as
Sergio Rivera came around to score on a Garrett Cun RBI double. Chun crossed home plate two batters later after advancing to third on a failed pickoff and a sacrifice fly from Gonzalez Febo.
FGCU broke things open in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam that made it 9-2.
The Wildcats loaded the bases thanks to a pair of singles and a walk before
Jose Gonzalez walked in the third run of the game for B-CU, scoring Rivera, but a strikeout ended any further threat.
The Eagles took that run right back a half-inning later, doing so on a bases-loaded walk of their own, and B-CU could get no closer as they fell, 10-3.
Marcos Gamboa took the loss. In 1.2 innings, he allowed four earned runs on seven hits with a walk and one strikeout.
Colby Lipovsky,
Joel Core, and
Carlos Jazmin rounded out the bullpen for the Wildcats in the loss.
The Wildcats will look to salvage a win in the series finale Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
