Dyson and Harmon Lead BCU Past Hornets

Wildcats swat Hornets in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dhashon Dyson and Zion Harmon combined for 35 points in helping Bethune-Cookman Men's Basketball take down Alabama State, 79-68 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball action inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Saturday afternoon.
 
Bethune-Cookman (10-11, 5-3) shot 46.2 percent from the field in the second half and limited the homestanding Hornets to 21.2 percent, respectfully.
 
Trailing 38-31 at the half, the Wildcats began the second half on a 12-6 run that saw the Wildcats chip into the lead, 44-43. After a Reggie Ward Jr. fastbreak layup with 14:15 remaining, Bethune-Cookman took a 45-44 lead – the first lead for the Maroon and Gold since it was 25-23 with 7:59 to go in the first half.
 
The lead swelled to 48-44 in favor of BCU when Dhashon Dyson connected on a three-pointer from the right elbow moments later.
 
When Jakobi Heady drove the lane for a layup with just over 10 minutes remaining, the BCU lead grew to double digits for the first time on the day with a 56-46 advantage. The Cats had their largest lead of the game at 72-56 when Dyson connected on his third three-pointer of the half.
 
Dyson finished the second half shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 5 of 6 from the field overall.
 
In the opening half, Alabama State (10-11, 5-3 SWAC) ran out to a 13-4 lead six minutes into the game.
 
A CJ Hines three-pointer was followed by an Antonio Madlock fastbreak layup to put the Hornets up 8-2. Hines added a floating jumper before hitting his second three-pointer of the half.
 
With BCU trailing 16-8, Dyson hit his first three-pointer of the afternoon, later followed with a Heady three-pointer and another Dyson three-ball to put the Cats up 17-16 with 12:25 left in the opening half.
 
The Hornets ended the half on a 12-5 run, thanks mainly in part to the play of Madlock and Micah Octave, combining for seven of the last 12 points.
 
In the first half, the Hornets shot 42.4 percent from the field, while hitting on 5 of 13 from beyond the arc. BCU countered with a 5 of 14 effort from long range, as Dyson added two of those baskets.
 
As a team, Bethune-Cookman shot 23 of 26 at the charity stripe, connecting on a season-best 86.4 percent of its shots.
 
Alabama State was led in scoring by Madlock with 17 points, as he shot 11-for-14 from the free throw line, adding four steals and four rebounds. Hines touched double-figures with 12 points and three assists. Also hitting double-digits scoring were Amarr Knox (11), Kendal Parker (10) and Octave (10).
 
Bethune-Cookman was led in scoring by Dyson with 19 points and six rebounds, as he finished the game 5 for 8 from three-point range. Overall, he was 7 of 11 from the field overall. Zion Harmon had 16 points for the Maroon and Gold as he was a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line.
 
Also in double-digits for the Cats was Ward with 14 points, as he added a 6-for-6 performance from the foul line. And it was Heady finishing the game with 11 points and three rebounds.
 
BCU is back on the court Monday, Feb. 5, when the Wildcats travel to Huntsville, Alabama to face Alabama A&M at 8:30 p.m. ET.
