DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Wildcats stranded 13 runners as Maine took the series finale, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
A three-run homer in the top of the second gave Maine (2-10, 0-0 AE) the first lead of the afternoon off the bat of Logan Burrill
The Wildcats (6-9, 0-0 SWAC) rebounded with two runs as a Maine throwing error and a bases-loaded walk made it a 3-2 game. The Wildcats left the bases loaded in the inning.
B-CU tied it up in the third thanks to another error by Maine, allowing
Jose Gonzalez to cross the plate.
Maine jumped in front again in the sixth on three straight base hits, chasing the Wildcats starter Danial Gaviria. An RBI double scored two more to make it 6-3, Black Bears.
The Wildcats stranded two runners in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the eighth before threatening once again in the bottom of the ninth.
A walk and
Jorge Rodriguez ground rule double put runners on second and third with the winning run at the plate. A
Peter Vazquez groundout made ti 6-4, but a strikeout ended the rally for B-CU.
Gaviria suffered the loss. He allowed six runs - all earned - on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Dylan Vega was excellent in relief. He tossed four innings, allowing just a hit and a walk with two strikeouts
- Jose Gonzalez has reached base safely in 13 straight games. He finished the day 3-5 at the plate.
- B-CU stranded 13 runners. Maine stranded six.
- B-CU walked eight times as a team.
The Wildcats will host one more tune-up before SWAC play begins, a midweek contest with Jacksonville. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 from Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
