JACKSON, Miss.. - The Wildcats outscored Mississippi Valley State, 21-7 in a doubleheader sweep, Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi.
GAME ONE - B-CU 11, MVSU 2
The Wildcats (8-9, 1-0 SWAC) jumped all over the Delta Devils (8-8, 0-1 SWAC) in the second inning as a fielding error followed by three straight singles and another error made it 3-0.
Garrett Chun collected an RBI on a fielder's choice before Sergio Reivera and
Jose Gonzalez added three more on back-to-back base knocks that made it 7-0.
B-CU stranded runners in each of the next three innings fefore adding three more in the sixth on a Rivera sacrifice fly, a Gonzalez RBI single, and a
Manny Souffrain RBI double that made it 10-0.
Mississippi Valley State finally got on the board in the seventh with an RBI double and RBI single that made it 10-2.
The Wildcats added one more in the ninth as
Ramses Cordova singled and scored on a passed ball.
Tanner Baccabello was stellar in eight innings of work, allowing just two earned runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his second win of the season.
Carlos Jazmin worked a scoreless ninth, striking out three and allowing two hits.
GAME TWO - B-CU 10, MVSU 5
The second contest began just as game one before it, with the Wildcats opening the scoring in the second, this time with two runs on a Cordova sacrifice fly and
Colton Olasin RBI single.
Bethune-Cookman posted a crooked number in the fourth, making it a 7-0 contest after another Cordova sacrifice fly, an RBI double from
Jorge Gonzalez Febo, an RBI single from Chun that ended in a steal of home.
MVSU managed just three hits through the fifth inning before finally scoring a pair in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer. A solo shot in the seventh made it 7-3.
The two sides traded runs in the eighth as Gonzalez Febo grabbed another RBI single, and the Delta Devils answered with a double that made it 8-4.
The Wildcats wrapped up the ballgame with two more in the ninth as Souffrain and
Peter Vazquez collected RBI to make it 10-4.
Mississippi Valley State managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single, but that was all as they fell 10-5.
Daniel Gaviria earned his second win of the season after tossing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Dylan Vega collected his first save of the season after two innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits with a strikeout.
- Five doubles in game one is a team-high on the season for B-CU.
- Jorge Gonzalez Febo finished the day 5-10 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.
- Peter Vazquez went 5-10 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
- Jose Gonzalez collected three RBI on four hits with three runs scored.
- Jose Gonzalez has reached base safely in 16 straight games. He has recorded a base-hit in eight straight.
The Wildcats will wrap up the three-game set looking for a sweep in the series final, set for a noon first pitch Sunday.
