Sambhus Leads BCU Against Cougars

Wildcats fall to College of Charleston

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Freshman Tuhina Sambhus helped spark the Wildcats on Saturday morning as Bethune-Cookman Women's Tennis fell at home to College of Charleston 7-0 in a nonconference match played at Derbyshire Park.

College of Charleston (5-2) claimed the doubles point with wins at both No. 1 and No. 2, respectfully.

Halli Trinkle and Jaiden McKee took down Bethune-Cookman's duo of Janet Imbo Nloga and Tuhina Sambhus at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 score. The Cougars then took the doubles point outright with a win at the No. 2 position courtesy a 6-2 decision in favor of College of Charleston's duo of Francesca Salvato and Oziera Ahmad over BCU's tandem of Jalayah Shaw and Allexii Bassette, 6-2.

"College of Charleston was the aggressor today – both in doubles and singles," commented Bethune-Cookman Head Coach Chris Wollett afterwards.

With injuries looming on the roster, Bethune-Cookman (0-11) shuffled the bottom of the lineup prior to the start of singles play.

Mckenzie Daniel claimed the first decision in favor of the visitors as she defeated BCU's Courdeja Clark at the No. 4 spot in straight-set fashion (6-0, 6-0). The second point for the Cougars was gathered by Anna Neyestani in No. 2 play as she collected a 6-2, 6-0 win from the Wildcats' Shaw.

The decisive point in the match was gathered by Maja Jekauc in No. 1 action as she defeated BCU's Janet Imbo Nloga in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).

But the most exciting match of the day came at No. 3 for the Wildcats as freshman Tuhina Sambhus went toe-to-toe with the Cougars' Klara Vukicevic. Despite falling in straight sets, the New Zealand native claimed seven games on the day. In the end, Vukicevic claimed the 6-4, 6-3 win, respectively.

"Although Tuhina's match was 6-4, 6-3, it was a long battle," said Wollett. "She had chances and created opportunities, but just couldn't seem to capitalize.

"All-in-all, I was very proud of how she competed. It was definitely a match she should grow from as she moves forward."

Bethune-Cookman next hosts Tennessee State on Tuesday, March 5, back at Derbyshire Park with first serve set for 11 a.m.
