DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Wildcats split a pair of extra-inning affairs against Florida A&M in a rainy two-day marathon this weekend at Jackie Robinson Ballpark
GAME ONE - B-CU 7, FAMU 6
FAMU (8-15, 3-2 SWAC) got on the board first with a run in the first frame of the afteroon thanks to an RBI double.
The Wildcats (12-10, 4-1 SWAC) quickly answered and then some with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. What began with
Sergio Rivera reaching on a two-base error and advancing to third on a wild pitch continued in a walk and Jose Gozalez sacrifice fly that made it 1-0.
From there,
Manny Souffrain was hit by a pitch and
Irvin Escobar scored Chun with an RBI single.
Ramses Cordova's RBI double scored Souffrain before Escobar came in on a groundout to make it 4-0.
Both sides traded just four hits through the seventh total as rain and weather began to fall at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Play was suspended for the night prior to the beginning of the seventh.
As play resumed at noon Sunday, the Rattlers jumped in front, 6-4 on a five-run top of the eighth that inlcuded two RBI singles, as well as an RBI fielder's choice and triple.
The Wildcats were able to rebound in the bottom of the frame as three-straight one-out singles allowed
Jose Gonzalez to cross the plate to make it 6-5.
Down one with two out in the bottom of the ninth, B-CU was able to even the score on a Chun RBI single, scoring Rivera, who had walked and stole second.
The Rattlers stranded two in the tenth, but it was B-CU that prevailed after a walk-off single from
Sergio Rivera, scoring pinch runner
Daniel Figueroa to shut the door at 7-6.
Marcos Gamboa took a no decition despite six strong innings Saturday in which he allowed only one earned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Pablo Torres earned his first win of the year, allowing only a walk with a strikeout in two scoreless innings of work.
GAME TWO - FAMU 3, B-CU 2
Game three began much like the game before it, as the Rattlers scored in the top fo the first on four straight singles that made it 2-0.
Just like the prior game, Bethune-Cookman scored a run of its own in the bottom of the frame, this time on an Escobar fielder's choice that scored Chun.
The Wildcats did not record another hit until the fifth, when B-CU loaded the bases on a
Colton Olasin single, Chun single, and
Jose Gonzalez hit-by-pitch. Souffrain recorded an RBI after another beaning that scored Olasin to tie things at 2-2.
The Rattlers stranded a pair of runners in the eighth, but B-CU kept them off the scoreboard, and the game headed into extras once again.
B-CU loaded the bases in the tenth, including two baserunners wiht no one out, but a swinging strikeout ended the threat.
Florida A&M came out on top after a walk, single, and RBI single were the difference in the 3-2 final.
Starter
Daniel Gaviria went six innings, allowing two runs - both earned - on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Dylan Dudones allowed just a hit with three walks in four innings, striking out two.
- Jose Gonzalez finished the pair of games 4-8 with an RBI. He has reached base safely in 20 straight games.
- Irvin Escobar recordec three RBI over the pair of games. He has reached base safely in 13 straight games.
The Wildcats will look for their third straight midweek win as they host USF on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
