Bethune-Cookman Overpowers Stetson, 8-7

Cats complete comeback victory over Volusia County opponent

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman scored two runs in the home-half of the seventh inning Tuesday night to complete a comeback victory over Stetson, 8-7 in midweek nonconference baseball action inside Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
 
Bethune-Cookman (19-17) led 6-5 after five complete innings.
 
Stetson (25-12) would take the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, as the Hatters took their first lead of the evening.
 
Yohann Dessureault began the inning reaching on a Bethune-Cookman error, allowing the second baseman to score two plays later off the end of Kyle Jones single to right. That tied the score at 6-6, before Gio Cueto knocked an RBI single to center in order to plate Jones for the go-ahead score.
 
Trailing 7-6 midway through seven, the Wildcats put two into scoring position in the form of Manny Souffrain and Peter Vazquez. That set the stage for catcher Jorge Rodriguez to line a two-run scoring single to deep right, giving BCU the 8-7 lead.
 
Pablo Torres would enter the game for the Cats with two outs in the top of the eighth, shutting the door and earning his fourth save of the season.
 
BCU started things off in the bottom of the first with three runs. A Gonzalez three-run shot clear the wall in left also crossed Sergio Rivera and Garrett Chun, respectfully.
 
Stetson responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second, as a leadoff double from Logan Hughes was immediately followed by Landon Moran's two-run home run to bring the visiting Hatters to within 3-2.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Wildcats would add another three runs.
 
Shortstop Ramses Cordova led off with his second round-tripper of the year. And it would be a Chun fielder's choice RBI that allowed Daniel Figueroa to score and make it 5-2 in favor of the Maroon and Gold. Rivera would collect the RBI sac fly to center for Chun to cross and make it a 6-2 ballgame.
 
Once again, the Hatters answered with two runs in the top of the next inning.
 
A Jones single was followed up with him swiping second. He would eventually cross off the end of a Daniel Labrador sac fly, while Isaiah Barkett would come in when Hughes registered the RBI groundout.
 
BCU led 6-4 heading into the fifth. That's when a Moran double would bring in Cueto to make it 6-3.
 
Bethune-Cookman's Jeffrey Gonzalez earned the win in a relief effort, bringing his record to 3-1 for the campaign. He worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up just one hit while striking out one. In earning the save, Torres toed the rubber for 1.1 innings, striking out one batter and giving up zero (0) hits.
 
Stetson reliever Zane Coppersmith accepted the loss, working two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on one hit, one walk and a strikeout.
 
The BCU bats were charged by Gonzalez's 2-for-3 effort and three RBIs. Cordova ended 2-for-4 with an RBI as well.
 
Bethune-Cookman returns to Jackie Robinson Ballpark this weekend as the Cats host Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Mississippi Valley State in a four-game series. The set begins Friday, April 19, at 7 p.m.
