DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A lopsided pair of games went the way of the Wildcats as they swept both sides of a doubleheader Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
GAME ONE - B-CU 8, MVSU 1
The Delta Devils (9-24, 1-16 SWAC), playing as the home team in the makeup contest from a rainout earlier in the spring, were the first to threaten in game one, putting runners on second and third thanks to a first-inning triple, intentional walk, and steal of second, but back-to-back strikeouts made short work of MVSU.
B-CU (9-24, 1-16) jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the third as
Ramses Cordova reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a
Franki Febles sacrifice fly.
The Wildcats added another in the fifth, again via the sacrifice fly - this time from
Colton Olasin to score
Jorge Rodriguez.
The top of the eighth saw B-CU grab one more as
Sergio Rivera singled up the middle to score
Garrett Chun from third after a one-out triple.
A three-hit bottom of the eighth saw the Delta Devils sneak a run to cut it to 3-1.
B-CU erased any doubt with a three-run top of the ninth as the Wildcats loaded the bases before Olain singled home a pair and
Daniel Figueroa added an RBI of his own with a sacrifice fly to close out the 6-1 win.
Marcos Gamboa made the start and earned his third win of the year after 7.2 innings in which he allowed only one earned run on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Dylan Dudones recorded his second save of 2024 after 1.1 innings of hitless ball, striking out two.
GAME TWO - B-CU 11, MVSU 1
Bethune-Cookman carried the late offensive momentum into game two, scoring three in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch and Olasin single that plated a pair.
The Cats quickly made it 7-0 on two double steals, an MVSU error, and a
Jose Gonzalez solo homer to left.
The Delta Devils loaded the bases in the top of the fifth after an intentional walk, but a foul popup prevented the damage.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Jason Hodges drove in another on an RBI triple to right center to make it 8-0. He came in to score one batter later as
Michael Rodriguez singled to make it 9-0.
MVSU finally broke onto the scoreboard with an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 9-1, but it was not enough to avoid the run rule.
B-CU ended things early with a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch to run-rule the Delta Devils, 11-1.
Daniel Gaviria made the start, working a seven-inning complete game in which he allowed one unearned run on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
