DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman's winning streak reaches a season-high three games as they improved to 4-1 at Moore Gymnasium with a 67-49 win over Mississippi Valley State, Saturday afternoon.
FIRST QUARTER
Bethune-Cookman (6-11, 3-2 SWAC) struggled to put the ball in the basket early as Mississippi Valley State (2-15, 1-5 SWAC) jumped out in front , 8-2 early.
From there, the Wildcats' frontcourt broke through as Cassandra Hawthorn,
Chanelle McDonald, and
Kayla Clark, each added a pair to bring the Cats back to within 12-10.
B-CU's first lead of the game came at the two-minute mark of the first quarter as
Asianae Nicholson's layup made it 14-12. Five straight from MVSU made it a 17-14 game through 10 minutes of play.
SECOND QUARTER
After two scoreless minutes to start the second, B-CU moved in front again, 18-17 on a pair of Nicholson free throws. The Delta Devilettes did not stand down, trading the lead again as Kylah McCullers fastbreak layup made it 22-20, Valley, with five minutes until halftime.
The two teams swapped leads down the stretch, but McDonald's paint jumper sent the Cats to the half up, 32-29.
THIRD QUARTER
The Wildcats opened their largest lead of the game just after halftime as Nicholson's layup made it 34-29, B-CU.
MVSU brought it back down to a one-point game one more time on a McCullers layup, but B-CU founds its shooting stroke from there.
The Cats broke off a 12-1 run for the remainder of the third, as Clark's layup made it a 47-36 game heading into the final frame.
THIRD QUARTER
B-CU continued to pour it on, as two straight
Daimoni Dorsey layups made it a 15-point contest with eight minutes remaining.
Jordan Brooks made it a 20-point game on a layup, and later a 26-point lead on a pair of free throws as the Cats cruised to the 67-49 win on their home floor.
- Asianae Nicholson posted an impressive 19-point, 18-rebound game - a career-high on the boards. She did so on 7-11 shooting with 8 of 18 boards coming on the offensive side of the floor.
- Jordan Brooks was the only other Wildcat in double figures - she had 12 points with siex rebounds and four assists.
- Eight different Wildcats scored in the game.
- B-CU held MVSU to 30 percent shooting, and 20 percent from three.
- The Wildcats scored 36 points in the paint, and 21 off the bench.
The Wildcats return to the road next weekend as they head to Mississippi to take on Alcorn State on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. EST
