Women’s Basketball suffers 66-49 setback at home

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman committed 27 turnovers Thursday evening resulting in 26 points for Alabama A&M as the visiting Bulldogs captured a 66-49 win in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Basketball action housed at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.

Header How it Happened
FIRST QUARTER

Lauryn Pendleton scored seven points in the opening quarter for visiting Alabama A&M (13-7, 6-2 SWAC) as the Bulldogs built a 6-2 lead midway through the period. Bethune-Cookman (6-14, 3-5 SWAC) quickly responded with a 6-2 run of its own, as an Asiane Nicholson layup was followed by a short jumper by forward Chanelle McDonald – added a jumper off the bench from Cassandra Hawthorne, to knot the game at 8-8 with under two minutes to play.

However, the Bulldogs would close the period on a 5-2 run beginning with a Darian Burgin three-pointer, allowing the visitors a 13-10 lead at the close of the quarter. The Cats shot 38.5 percent from the field in the first quarter but were just 0 of 5 from beyond the arc.

SECOND QUARTER
Alabama A&M built a 21-12 lead three minutes into the second quarter as Walker connected on her first three-pointer of the evening, as well as a Pendleton jumper off the break from a B-CU turnover. Wildcats freshman guard Jordan Brooks and junior Daimoni Dorsey went back-to-back in scoring to trim the B-CU deficit at 21-16, before the Bulldogs' Mailyn Wilkerson registered a three-point play to advance the lead once again.

Dorsey kept the Wildcats within striking distance through the quarter, scoring seven points in the period, including a crucial three-pointer at the 2:46 mark that cut the deficit to five at 28-23. Nicholson's turnaround jumper just outside the paint produced the halftime score of 28-25 in favor of the Bulldogs.

THIRD QUARTER
Bethune-Cookman shot 40 percent from the field in the third quarter as the Wildcats received four points from McDonald to stay within three points for much of the period. AAMU led 40-37 after Nicholson drove to the glass for a layup, before closing the quarter on an 8-0 run beginning with a three-point play converted at the foul line by Kaila Walker. Another Burgin three-pointer was followed by a pair of Walker free throws allowing the visitors a 48-37 lead – their largest of the game to that point, heading into the fourth and final period.

Neither team handled the ball well in the third quarter, as B-CU committed 11 turnovers as compared to nine by AAMU.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Cats were limited to a 3-for-12 shooting touch as a team in the fourth quarter, with Alabama A&M surging to a 20-point lead (66-46) late-on after a three-pointer from Walker. She had a team-high five points in the period, while B-CU answered with five points from Nicholson – three of those coming at the charity stripe.
