Flyers Use Hot Shooting to Beat Wildcats

DAYTON, OH - Javon Bennett scored 25 points as his Flyers held on to beat Bethune-Cookman 91-82. The Wildcats were able to remain in striking distance until the very end, but Dayton's elite offensive production proved too much to overcome. Header How it Happened
1st Half
Bethune-Cookman (1-3) and Dayton (3-1) went back-and-forth early on, with the Flyers clinging to a 12-9 lead at the first media timeout.

A jumper by Arterio Morris tied the game up at 14, and a putback layup by Jakobi Heady gave the Wildcats the 16-14 lead.

A three-pointer by Rickey Mitchell Jr. extended the Wildcats lead to four with 8:31 left, but the Flyers were able to retake the lead thanks to hot shooting from beyond the arc.

Javon Bennett made a three-pointer with 1:26 left to extend the Flyer lead to 10, but B-CU closed out the half strong. The Wildcats scored the last four points, including a second-chance layup by Ariel Bland to make it a 45-39 game heading into the locker room.

The three-point margin proved to be the difference in the first half. Dayton shot 8-12, while the Wildcats shot 2-8. B-CU was the better team in the paint outscoring the Flyers 26-12.

2nd Half
The Wildcats continued to show their toughness throughout the second half, as they never allowed the Flyers to pull away.

Seneca Willoughby knocked down a three-pointer with 14:21 left to cut the deficit to just six, but Dayton always seemed to have an answer as they continued to shoot extremely well.

B-CU was able to get it back to within six at the 6:13 mark following two-made free-throws from Arterio Morris. Though Dayton was able to get the Wildcats into foul trouble and take advantage from the charity stripe to maintain the advantage.

Despite the tremendous fight from the Wildcats, the Flyers strong offensive output proved to be enough to fend off the Wildcats. The final score was 91-82 as Dayton shot 61.9% in the second half.
