BIRMINGHAM - Bethune-Cookman capped off a successful season with six postseason award winners, the SWAC announced Monday afternoon from their headquarters in Birmingham.
Antwone Watts,
Max Tulen,
Javon Ross, and Cole Has were named to the All-SWAC First Team while
Christian Loving and
Maleek Huggins were named to the second team.
In his redshirt senior season,
Antwone Watts proved to be one of the most dangerous defensive players in the SWAC. He led the Wildcats and the SWAC with 92.0 total tackles. The safety also finished with 2.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, an interception, and five passes defensed. Watts had a dominant performance against Mississippi Valley State as he collected 11 tackles, a tackle-for-loss, an interception, two pass breakups, and a pick six.
Max Tulen was a weapon for the Wildcats' special teams unit, finishing as one of the top punters in the league. His 44.6 yards per punt led the SWAC and he was able to pin the ball inside the 20-yard line on 10 different occasions. His 10 punts of 50+ yards was 4th in the league.
Javon Ross was a reliable weapon for B-CU both as a receiver and a returner. The sophomore finished with 52 catches for 685 yards and four touchdowns while also adding 84 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He ranked fourth in the SWAC in receiving yards and third in catches per game. As a returner, Ross had 506 yards and two return touchdowns. His two return touchdowns and 1275 all-purpose yards were the most of any player in the league.
As a redshirt freshman,
Cole Hash got the job done as the Wildcats' regular long-snapper. He finished the season with two total tackles and he was a key component in B-CU's top ranked punting unit. He handles field goal and punting duties without error in his first year while helping his team not allow any blocks on kicks.
Christian Loving anchored a B-CU offensive line that saw its best offensive output since joining the SWAC. B-CU finished fourth in the SWAC in total offense, increasing its average output by nearly a touchdown from a year ago. The Cats rushed for over 170 yards per game as a team and nearly five yards per carry and boasted the best passing offense in the league at nearly 240 yards per game in the air.
Maleek Huggins was the number one receiving option for the Wildcats this season. He led the team with 64 catches for 864 yards and eight touchdown receptions. The junior finished tied for first in the SWAC in reception, was third in receiving yards, and second in touchdowns. He also finished tied for first in receptions per game at 5.3. Against Edward Waters, Higgins had one of the best performances by a receiver all season, finishing with six catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
