RECAPPING B-CU'S LAST GAME (at Prairie View A&M)
Bethune-Cookman junior guard
Daimoni Dorsey poured in a team-high 17 points, while classmate
Asianae Nicholson supplied 16, as the Wildcats fell to Prairie View A&M 65-60 inside William Nicks Building.
Bethune-Cookman came out strong to start the game, jumping to an early 4-0 lead behind baskets from
Jordan Brooks and
Daimoni Dorsey. After Prairie View A&M's Amauri Williams scored a putback to get the Panthers on the board, Dorsey responded with another jumper to push the lead to 6-2. The Wildcats extended their advantage to 9-2 at the 6:27 mark when Brooks connected on three straight free throws. However, Prairie View answered with Crystal Schultz scoring a fastbreak layup to cut into the deficit. Bethune-Cookman's momentum continued as
Asianae Nicholson and
Janessa Kelley contributed to pushing the lead to its largest margin at 15-4 with 3:41 remaining in the quarter. Kelley's basket came after securing an offensive rebound, highlighting the Wildcats' presence on the offensive glass.
The Panthers mounted a comeback in the final minutes of the quarter. Adreanna Waddle got things started with a layup off an assist from Mikayla Hutchinson. The hosts then went on an 11-2 run to close the quarter, featuring impressive play from Hutchinson who scored three consecutive baskets, including a fastbreak layup. Kaci Chairs hit a crucial three-pointer in transition to tie the game at 15-15. The quarter ended deadlocked at 17-17 after both teams exchanged baskets -
Chanelle McDonald scoring for Bethune-Cookman and Hutchinson hitting a fastbreak jumper for Prairie View at the buzzer.
Bethune-Cookman took a brief 19-17 lead on early-on courtesy a Kelley jumper from the wing. Prairie View then seized momentum with back-to-back three-pointers from Kaci Chairs. The first three put the Panthers up 20-19, and Chairs followed it with another in transition off a Thornton assist to extend the lead to 23-19. Prairie View maintained its advantage midway through the period, pushing it to 25-20 on a Schultz fastbreak layup. Bethune-Cookman fought back, with Kelley scoring twice in the paint to keep the visiting Wildcats within striking distance.
After the media timeout, Bethune-Cookman's Dorsey, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, hit a jumper to pull within one point at 25-24. The teams then traded baskets, with Kelley hitting a game-tying three-pointer to make it 27-27 with 3:40 remaining. In the closing minutes, Prairie View leaned on CJ Wilson scoring two crucial layups in the paint, and Mikayla Hutchinson added a jumper. Dorsey hit a three-pointer to stay close, but Prairie View closed strong with baskets from Nyam Thornton and Ash'a Thompson to take a 37-32 lead into halftime.
The quarter began with B-CU quickly capitalizing on a turnover by Prairie View's Hutchinson, as McDonald sliced through the paint for a layup to cut Prairie View's lead at 37-34. Nicholson then followed with a fastbreak layup to make it a one-point game. Moments later, Prairie View's Amauri Williams scored to extend their lead to 39-36. Nicholson remained active for the Cats, scoring another layup to keep it close. After a media timeout at the 6:36 mark, the game remained tight with
Kayla Clark hitting a free throw to tie it at 39-39.
The momentum shifted when Schultz hit a crucial three-pointer for Prairie View to put the Panthers back up, 42-39. However, B-CU responded strongly, with Kelley hitting her second three-pointer of the game to give the Maroon and Gold their first lead at 45-42. They extended that lead to 47-42 on another Nicholson layup. Prairie View managed to close the gap slightly, with the quarter ending at 49-47 in Bethune-Cookman's favor after PVAMU's Thompson's last-second layup.
The Wildcats began the final period by pushing their lead to 50-47 on yet another Nicholson free throw. Prairie View stayed close, with Adreanna Waddle scoring to close the gap at 50-49. The lead changed hands several times through the early stages of the final quarter, with Prairie View taking a 51-50 lead on an Amauri Williams layup before Dorsey responded with her second three-pointer of the contest to put Bethune-Cookman back up 53-51. The game remained tight until Prairie View made a decisive run in the final minutes.
With 2:18 remaining, Thornton hit a crucial three-pointer to give Prairie View a 61-58 lead. Hutchinson followed with her first shot of the game from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 64-58. Despite Bethune-Cookman's efforts to rally, including two free throws by Clark to cut the lead to 64-60, Prairie View maintained control. Williams hit a key free throw in the final seconds, and the Panthers' defense held strong, securing the 65-60 victory.
Bethune-Cookman was paced by Dorsey's 17 points – adding a 2-for-4 outing from long range, also contributing five assists and four steals.
