DeLAND, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball registered a pair of wins Saturday on the second day of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida. The Wildcats defeated Fairfield, 8-1 in their first game, and followed with a 6-3 victory over the host Hatters in the nightcap.

B-CU 8, FAIRFIELD 1
Halyne Gonzalez pitched a complete game and Bethune-Cookman capitalized on three Fairfield errors to secure an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon on day two of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida.

Bethune-Cookman (3-7) cracked a scoreless game in the second inning when Shanai Owens led off with a single to left field. After freshman
Molly Blackwood reached on a throwing error,
Aysiah Gonzalez's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners.
India Stokes then delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Owens for the game's first run.
Joslynn Davis followed with an infield single that brought home Blackwood, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Fairfield (1-3) halved the deficit in the top-half of the fourth

Ava Armuth drew a walk, advanced to second on Quinn McGonigle's single through the left side, and came around to score on Danica Silvestri's run-scoring single to left.

The Wildcats responded emphatically in the bottom-half of the inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs.

The rally began when Blackwood reached on one of three Stags errors on the day, before the designated player was replaced by pinch runner
Alana Cypress. With runners on second and third and two away, Stokes delivered her second RBI single of the game.
Emma Bradley-Tse and
Jessica Alaan followed with run-scoring hits before shortstop
Briana Velazquez capped the outburst with a two-run single down the left field line, extending the lead to 7-1.

Bethune-Cookman added an insurance run in the fifth when
Joyce Bloome, running for
Aysiah Gonzalez, scored on a fielder's choice off the end of Bradley-Tse's at-bat.

Halyne Gonzalez (3-5) went the distance for the Wildcats, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out four. Peyton Shields (0-1) took the loss for Fairfield, surrendering seven unearned runs in 3.2 innings of action.

Stokes, a freshman from Crofton, Maryland, led the Wildcats at the plate, turning in a perfect 3-for-3 showing with two RBIs and a run scored. Velazquez was 1-for-4 at the dish with two RBIs as well.

Charli Warren had two of Fairfield's five hits in the losing effort.

B-CU 6, STETSON 3
Briana Velazquez drove in three runs and Bethune-Cookman benefitted from on a big third inning to defeat Stetson 6-3 on Saturday evening at Patricia Wilson Field in the final game of day two action of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Florida.

Bethune-Cookman (4-7) used a big four-run fourth inning to chase Stetson starter Kennedy Temples.

After senior centerfielder
Joslynn Davis walked and junior
Emma Bradley-Tse and sophomore
Jessica Alaan mirrored each other with consecutive singles to load the bases, it would be redshirt senior
Briana Velazquez clearing them with a double to right field.
Molly Blackwood followed with another double to right-center, driving in Velazquez before being thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

B-CU added to its lead in the fourth when
Kendall Macauley walked and later scored on a throwing error charged to the Stetson infield, making it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

Stetson (7-3) scored three runs in the home-half of the fifth to make it 5-3.

Hatters right fielder Gia Napoli started the rally with a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Addison Foster singled through the left side, prompting B-CU veteran head coach
Laura Watten to go to
Sofia Vallejos-Coleman out of the bullpen. Chumley immediately posted an RBI single through the right side, and Riley Venn later delivered a two-run single shot back up the middle.

The Wildcats answered in the sixth when Davis plated Macauley with, who had led off the inning with a single, after the B-CU third baseman singled in her at-bat to begin the inning. That stretched the B-CU lead, 6-3.

Alyssa Lopez (1-2) earned her first win of the campaign for the Maroon and Gold, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Vallejos-Coleman finished the game with 2.2 innings of relief, surrendering one run and collecting a strikeout.

Stetson starter Temples (0-1) took the loss for the hosts, giving up four runs on five hits in three innings, also adding three strikeouts and a walk.

Davis led the Wildcats' offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Â
Meanwhile, Foster and Chumley each collected two hits for the Hatters, who outhit Bethune-Cookman 8-7 but left seven runners on base.

B-CU and Stetson will face off once again on Sunday, at 12:30 p.m., back at Patricia Wilson Field for the final game of the Hatter Classic.
