Stetson Tops B-CU Tennis, 7-0

Jalayah Shaw takes set in No. 1 singles

DeLAND, Fla. – Stetson captured all positions Friday afternoon in order to defeat Bethune-Cookman 7-0 in nonconference women's tennis play at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on the Stetson University campus in nearby DeLand, Florida. For Bethune-Cookman, it was the second loss of the season away to the Hatters of Stetson.

Header How it Happened

Stetson (6-1) took all three doubles positions, including a hard-fought 6-3 decision on court one, as the Hatters team of Katsiaryna Tuliakova and Anastasija Adeikyte took down Bethune-Cookman's pair of Jalayah Shaw and Allexii Bassette, 6-3. The Hatters grabbed a 6-0 win at the No. 2 doubles spot in order to earn the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

In the singles competition, Bethune-Cookman (1-3) used sophomore Jalayah Shaw at the No. 1 position. The Plant City, Florida native took Stetson's Katsiaryna Tuliakova to a third set in the most exciting match of the day. Shaw dropped the opener 2-6, before evening the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Tuliakova eventually won the match with a 10-4 super set score line in the third.

"What a great performance from [Jalayah] Shaw at the No. 1 singles spot," said Wollett afterwards. "She really showed a lot of heart and fight in that match splitting sets. It's a shame that she came up a bit short in the tiebreaker as I thought it was one of her collegiate matches."

Freshman Zahara El-Zein continued to impress B-CU Head Coach Chris Wollett in the No. 2 position before falling to the Hatters' Cheri Darley on a 6-1, 6-1 line. Stetson's Alanna DiFrancesco defeated B-CU's Allexii Bassette in the No. 3 spot with scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Stetson took No. 4 and No. 5 singles on the strength of 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins, respectively.
