PRAIRIE VIEW, Tex. - In a game that saw only seven Wildcats take the floor, Bethune-Cookman escaped Prairie View with an 85-82 win, Saturday night at the William J. Nicks Building.
FIRST HALF
An even matchup through five minutes saw Prairie View A&M (4-19, 3-7 SWAC) pull in front of Bethune-Cookman (10-13, 7-3 SWAC), 11-8 on a Jordan Tillmon three-pointer.
The Panthers led by seven on a Marcel Bryant jumper, but a
Seneca Willoughby three and
Daniel Rouzan dunk made it a two-point game at 17-15 through seven minutes of play.
Prairie View led by as much as 11 in the first half on a Braelon Bush three with five minutes until the break, but the Wildcats scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half to head to the locker room down only 40-37.
SECOND HALF
B-CU tied things up at 46-46 on a
Trey Thomas layup off a Panthers turnover, and again at 49-49 through five minutes on a
Kalil Camara putback dunk and-one.
Prairie View threatened to pull away with the game, going up 61-51 on two Elijah Terry free throws with 12 minutes to go, but the resilient Wildcats scored the next ten points to tie the game again at 61-61.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the half at 63-61 as Thomas sunk a pair of shots from the charity stripe with eight minutes remaining.
Still the Panthers persisted, going up again by five as Bush ran the floor for a fast break layup. with four to go.
B-CU took the lead for good with just 40 seconds remaining as Rouzan broke an 81-81 tie with a paint jumper.
A missed Panthers free throw prevented Prairie View from tying things at 83-all, and
Jesus Carralero Martin made the most of his trip to the line, draining a pair of free throws as B-CU held on, 85-82.
- Trey Thomas led the Wildcats with 27 points - just four off of his career-high. He made four threes, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out three assists.
- Jesus Carralero Martin scored 17 - a season high - on 6-8 shooting with six rebounds, three assists, a block, and two steals.
- Daniel Rouzan scored 16 on 8-10 shooting with eight rebounds, an assist, and a block.
- Seneca Willoghby added a team-high five assists.
- B-Cu shot 57 percent from the floor.
- The Wildcats scored 20 second-chance points to PVAMU's 4.
- B-CU scored 19 points on the fast break, and 48 points in the paint.
Next up, the Cats will head down the road to Houston to take on the Tigers of Texas Southern on Monday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST
