DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Zahara El-Zein turned in a singles win Thursday afternoon for Bethune-Cookman as the Wildcats fell at home to Northern Kentucky 6-1 at Derbyshire Park in Daytona Beach, Florida.
El-Zein, a 5-foot-5 freshman from Harare, Zimbabwe, collected her third singles win of the spring season as she fought past Northern Kentucky's Ana Isabela Serrano at No. 2 singles. The victory marked her second in the last three outings, with her last match going unfinished versus Prairie View A&M in last weekend's SWAC Pod #1 event in Jackson, Mississippi.
Northern Kentucky (4-5) claimed the doubles point to grab the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Norse team of Mariajose Hernandez and Darya Gneydina fought past Bethune-Cookman's tandem of
Jalayah Shaw and El-Zein at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. NKU posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles against B-CU's
Keona Burley and
Lesa Snipes-Williams.
Bethune-Cookman (1-8) used Burley at No. 3 singles, with the senior from Pompano Beach, Florida playing tough to claim three games in her match against NKU's Gneydina. The Norse eventually took a 6-2, 6-1 win on court three to give the visitors the match point.
The Wildcats' Shaw took two games in her opening set at the top flight before suffering a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to NKU's Ashlee Fisk, respectfully.
B-CU will next face IU Indy at home Wednesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. The match will take place at Derbyshire Park and admission to all B-CU Women's Tennis matches is free.
