Andrey Martinez have been tabbed with Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) weekly awards, the conference office announced Thursday from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. It
Sanchez was named both SWACÂ Pitcher of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, while Martinez takes home Hitter of the Week honors.Â
Edwin Sanchez was a force in a run-rule win Sunday over Alcorn State to cap off a three-game sweep to open SWAC play for B-CU. In just five innings, he scattered six hits, striking out a career-high 13 batters, the most by any Wildcat arm this season and the most by any SWAC pitcher on the year. He did so on only 96 pitches. It is the most strikeouts in a game for a Wildcat since Nolan Santos struck out 13 at Mississippi Valley State on April 14, 2023. He did so in seven innings to Sanchez's five.
Andrey Martinez, a junior out of Barranquilla, Columbia, enjoyed an excellent weekend at the plate against Alcorn State. He collected five hits on 10 at-bats, scoring six runs with a dou ble, a homer, and eight RBI. He led the way in a weekend sweep that saw the Wildcats outscore the Braves 46-16 in three games. Â
This marks the fourth, fifth, and sixth weekly honors of the season for B-CU baseball. It marks the second and third honors for Sanchez, who was named Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 26.
The Cats will head to Jackson, Miss. to take on the Tigers of Jackson State for their first road series of SWAC play beginning Mar. 21 at 7 p.m. EST.
