BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior starting pitcher Tanner Boccabello and outfielder Armani Newton have been named Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. It marks the first weekly honors of the 2025 season for each. 

Tanner Boccabello was stellar again for the Wildcats in a Friday night win over UMES. He tossed seven innings of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits, a walk and a career-high nine strikeouts. He improved to 2-0 on the season with an ERA of only 1.83 and an opponent batting average of 1.54

Armani Newton enjoyed an excellent week at the plate for B-CU in five games against Indiana State and UMES. On the week, he totaled four hits, five RBI, two homers, five walks, and six runs scored. His best game came in the first of a doubleheader against the Hawks in which he finished 2-3 at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI, a homer, and a walk. He played a critical role as the Wildcats swept through UMES, including two RBI and a run scored in a historic 30-5 victory over the Hawks on Sunday.

This marks the second and third weekly honors of the season for B-CU baseball. Edwin Sanchez was named Newcomer of the Week on Feb. 26.

The Wildcats will hit the road this weekend for a three game set with ASUN opponent Florida Gulf Coast beginning Friday, March 7 in Fort Myers.
