Cats Take Down UNF in Jacksonville

B-CU notches first midweek win of season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Andrey Martinez delivered two home runs and Sergio Rivera provided another as Bethune-Cookman Baseball collected its first midweek win of the 2025 season on Tuesday afternoon in taking down North Florida 14-3 at Harmon Stadium.

Bethune-Cookman (21-16) wasted no time getting to North Florida starting pitcher Ryan Furey, as right fielder Andrey Martinez blasted a solo home run in the first inning to ignite a three-run frame.

With the visiting Wildcats on top 3-0 heading into the home-half of the opening inning, North Florida (19-18) responded with two runs in the bottom half.

Shortstop Mitchell Collins kicked off the Ospreys at-bat with a two-out base knock sent right back up the middle, before scoring his team's opening run two plays later courtesy a wild pitch from B-CU starting hurler Pablo Torres. White followed with an RBI single to center scoring Connor Moore, bringing the hosts to within 3-2.

However, that was as close as the game would get as the Wildcats tacked on another run in the second, followed by a four-run outburst in the third inning.

Newton scored the first run of the third inning when he raced in off a Jeter Polledo sacrifice fly, putting the B-CU lead at 5-2. Sergio Rivera's three-run homer pushed the advantage to 8-2, registering his second homer of the season with a two-out shot over the wall in left field.

The Wildcats continued to pull away in the later innings, adding two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth to induce the run-rule margin. Despite hitting into a double play in the seventh, Lee drove in Reinaldo Plascencia in the seventh to make it 11-3 after the Ospreys brought a run back in the home-half of the sixth.

Subbing in as a pinch hitter and playing centerfield, B-CU's Daniel Figueroa delivered a clutch two-run single in the eighth to cap the scoring with a ball well hit to center, plating Michael Rodriguez and Jose Fernandez on the play, producing the 14-3 final score.

The Wildcats' pitching staff combined effectively with reliever Julian Carrasquilla as he tossed a scoreless inning in relief of starter Pablo Torres. Six B-CU pitchers limited the Ospreys to just seven hits while striking out 10. Torres (1-0) earned the win in a scheduled rehab start, his first of the season, as he worked two frames on the bump, allowing two runs (unearned) on three hits and collecting three strikeouts. Sebastian Garrido, Brandon Vazquez and Logan Wirt all worked scoreless frames in relief as well.

Furey (0-3) took the loss for UNF after allowing three runs (one earned) in the opening frame.

Collins led UNF with three hits, including a double, but the Ospreys left 10 runners on base. Ty Velardo provided UNF's lone extra-base hit with a solo home run in the sixth.

Andrey Martinez delivered a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs to power the Wildcats offensively. As a team, the Cats finished with 14 hits as eight different players recorded at least one hit. Armani Newton went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Polledo added two hits and an RBI of his own.

Bethune-Cookman next welcomes in-state foe Florida A&M for a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series at the top of the league standings beginning Thursday, April 17, at 6 p.m. The series will take place at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
