DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Nola Hemphill was named to the all-tournament team as Bethune-Cookman Volleyball finished up play as host of the Bash at the Beach on Saturday afternoon with the Wildcats falling 3-0 to visiting Jacksonville inside Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. The Cats fell on scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-21.
Â
Jacksonville (7-2) completed a perfect 3-0 weekend as Breanna McDonough and Rebekah Williams each topped double-digit kills for the Dolphins.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (3-6) grabbed a 20-19 lead late in the opening set after an attack error from JU's Jade Cuya Cobos. Claire Mrukowski quickly tied things up at 20-20 with her kill, before another Dolphins attack error knotted the set again. The visitors eventually received a kill from McDonough to grab the opening set win, 25-23, after a reversal of a call on a challenge.
Â
Jacksonville hit .333 in the second set, while B-CU was held to a match-low .032 hitting percentage in the frame.
Â
Mrukowski, who was named to the all-tournament team for the Dolphins, recorded four kills on seven swings in the second frame, adding an assisted block as well. Williams had three kills, and it was McDonough with three kills of her own to lead the Dolphins to the 25-14 win.
Â
In the third set, B-CU tallied 14 kills against just three errors – the Wildcats lowest of the match in a set, as both sophomore
Amya Jennings and
Shayla Henry registered four kills each. Jennings would also claim a pair of assisted blocks for the Maroon and Gold.
Â
After Jacksonville jumped to a 19-14 edge behind kills from Mrukowski, Bethune-Cookman cut into the lead as
Kaleigh Williams and Jennings combined for a block, as well as a service error by the Dolphins' Bella Dearinger.
Â
That brought B-CU to within 23-16.
Â
Another pair of attack errors by JU – four total in the set, chipped away at the deficit for the Cats further at 24-20. But the kill from JU's Williams ended the match.
Â
The Dolphins were paced by 11 kills from McDonough, and the 10-kill performance from Williams. Cuya Cobos had 24 assists, followed by Dearinger with 20. Williams would complete her double-double with a team-high tying 15 digs.
Â
As for Bethune-Cookman, the Wildcats were led offensively by Jennings with nine kills, as setter Hemphill finished with 17 assists and nine digs.
Sthefany Carvalho turned in seven digs, and Jennings was just short of a double-double with a team-high 11 digs of her own, adding a pair of assisted blocks in the process.
Â
The Wildcats return to action Friday, Sept. 19, when traveling south to the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, Florida, hosted by Florida Atlantic. The Cats will join teams from George Washington and Stetson, along with the host Owls of FAU over the course of the weekend.
