DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jayden James had 20 kills and Hope Briggs supplied 12 kills of her own Sunday afternoon as Jackson State defeated Bethune-Cookman 3-0 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Volleyball match at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Florida. JSU took the match on scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.
Â
A kill from Naija Gadis advanced visiting Jackson State (3-9, 2-0 SWAC) to a 19-13 lead in the first set. But it would be a 4-0 run from Bethune-Cookman (4-10, 1-1 SWAC) that saw the Wildcats pull within 19-17 after a pair of
Kaleigh Williams service aces sandwiched a
Sierra Herndon kill. After a kill from senior opposite
Ariel Simmons, B-CU was within 21-20, before JSU's Jayden James tallied her sixth kill of the opening frame. Hope Briggs finished the set with back-to-back kills for the Tigers.
Â
Herndon, a senior from Detroit, Michigan, registered four kills in the opening set for the Wildcats.
Â
Bethune-Cookman was limited to a match-low .032 hitting performance in the second set as the Maroon and Gold had nine kills on eight errors, mixed with 31 total attempts.
Â
With the set tied at 13-13, Briggs delivered a kill for the visitors before an attack error was charged to
Neveah Donahoe of the Cats after an official review on the ball originally being called in off the Donahoe swing. Another attack error by the Cats pushed the JSU lead to 16-13. James served an ace and provided a kill down the stretch to close the 25-19 set win for her side.
Â
It would be Donahoe supplying the Cats with three kills in the third set, as she hit .750 with just four swings in the frame. But on the other end, James posted eight kills and Katejion Robinson had four as Briggs and James accounted for four of the final five points of the match.
Â
JSU used the 20 kills from James – a match-high in that department, while Briggs' 12 kills were the second-most on the day. Karys Dove handed out 23 assists with 11 digs for a double-double performance.
Â
Bethune-Cookman was topped by seven kills from Herndon, adding five blocks (four assisted), matching her season-high in that category from last weekend versus George Washington as part of the Owls Paradise Classic in Boca Raton, Florida.
Nola Hemphill had 12 assists, and freshman Melissa Goznalez supplied 11.
Sthefany Carvalho was the defensive stopper with a team-high seven digs.
Â
The Wildcats return to action Friday, Oct. 3, when traveling to Alabama A&M for a match taking place at 7 p.m. (ET).
