BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman's
Sthefany Carvalho has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the period of September 3-9, announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
Â
Playing in her first matches for Bethune-Cookman after transferring in from UAlbany, graduate student Carvalho was big for the Wildcats last week, engineering the defensive exploits as B-CU went 2-1 at the Aggie/Phoenix Invitational co-hosted by North Carolina A&T and Elon, respectively.
Â
The Brazilian reeled in 58 digs across three matches, averaging 4.83 digs per set. She held a .933 serve-receive mark as well. Offensively, Carvalho tallied four service aces and handed out seven assists. In a five-set thrilling win over host Elon, Carvalho sparked the Cats defense with 25 digs and four assists, adding three service aces. That victory over the Phoenix allowed Head Coach Brittany Williams to claim her 100th career victory as a collegiate head coach – all coming at the helm in Daytona Beach.
Â
Bethune-Cookman next travels to the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament hosted by Houston Christian in Houston, Texas. The tournament begins on Friday, Sept. 5.
