MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Coriah Beck made a go-ahead three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining, helping the Bulldogs finish off a 49-44 win over Bethune-Cookman at the AAMU Event Center.
1st Quarter
Bethune-Cookman (3-18, 1-7) started the quarter slowly, making just one field goal during the first six minutes of the game. Alabama A&M (11-9, 7-1) held a narrow 4-2 lead as both teams struggled to find a rhythm.
A three-pointer by Daimoni Dorsey finally opened things up for the Wildcats offensively as they were able to surge to a 13-7 lead at the end of the quarter. Dorsey hit both her three-point attempts while Janessa Kelly made her only attempt with just eight seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs finished with just seven shot attempts compared to 14 for B-CU and were forced into eight turnovers.
2nd Quarter
B-CU could not carry their momentum into the second quarter as they finished just 2-of-14 in the frame. The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 19-6 as they shot 50% from the field and made six free-throws.
The Wildcats went almost nine minutes without a made field goal. Janessa Kelly was the Cats' only source of offense, hitting two more three-pointers to give her nine points at the break.
3rd Quarter
Bethune-Cookman began the third on a 7-2 run. Daimoni Dorsey hit a jump shot to begin the period and Madison Holden made one to cut the lead to three.
The teams then traded baskets before the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to take a nine-point lead. The lead for AAMU was six at the end of the quarter. Each team shot over 40% in the quarter.
4th Quarter
The fourth was a defensive battle to the finish, with Bethune-Cookman coming back to tie the game 2:54 remaining despite not making a field goal in the quarter.
The Bulldogs made just one field goal, but it was the most important shot of the game. Coriah Beck made a three-pointer with just 22 seconds left to retake the lead.
Alabama A&M would force a Wildcat turnover on the following possession to effectively ice the game for the Bulldogs.
- Daimoni Dorsey was the Wildcats' leading scorer with 16 points.
- Janessa Kelly finished with three three-pointers made.
- Moses Davenport scored a season-high 19 points for the Bulldogs.
- Bethune-Cookman shot 42.9% from beyond the arc but just 23.9% over all.
- The two teams combined for 51 free-throw attempts.
The Wildcats head crosstown to take on the Alabama State Hornets. The game will begin Saturday at 1:30 p.m. EST
