Bethune-Cookman women's tennis wrapped up its second event of the fall season Tuesday at the SWAC Fall Tournament in Jackson, continuing to show remarkable improvement against conference opponents.
The tournament was highlighted by a singles quarterfinal appearance from Roselida Asumwa and a runner-up finish from the doubles pairing of Maria Romero Vargas and Asumwa.
Asumwa opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Grambling State's Matea Andelic to advance to the quarterfinals.
Facing Alabama State's Kesmat El Tawil, Asumwa battled against the eventual singles champion before falling 6-1, 6-1.
The Wildcats continued to make their presence felt in doubles competition, as Romero Vargas and Asumwa delivered one of the tournament's strongest runs.
The duo opened with a dominant 8-0 shutout of Grambling State's Katherine Grados and Matea Andelic before cruising past Southern's LaTesha Grant and Decora Antoine, 8-2, in the quarterfinals.
Romero Vargas and Asumwa picked up another victory on Tuesday, defeating Alabama A&M's Melissa Mwakha and Nardine Salem, 8-4, in the semifinals to punch their ticket to the championship match.
The Wildcats ultimately fell to Alabama State's Cleanne Pickel and Alexia Campagna, 6-4, 6-2, but not before establishing themselves as one of the tournament's premier doubles teams.
