Bethune-Cookman (3-2, 1-0) opened its SWAC schedule with a 16-10 victory over Alabama State last Saturday.
The Wildcats controlled the first half defensively, while Aiden Lanier connected on a pair of field goals to give B-CU a 6-3 lead at halftime. Rashon Brown Jr. provided several big plays on the ground, including a 41-yard run to open the second half.
After Alabama State intercepted Tyler Jefferson early in the third quarter, the B-CU offense responded with a lengthy scoring drive. Jefferson connected with Willie Anderson and Kobe Stewart on key completions before Brown capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 13-3.
Brown continued to lead the Wildcats on the ground, breaking off another 47-yard run to put B-CU in scoring position. Lanier added another field goal to make it 16-3, but Alabama State quickly responded with a touchdown to cut the deficit to six.
The Hornets had an opportunity to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats came up with a fourth-down stop inside the B-CU 20-yard line. After a B-CU punt gave Alabama State one final possession, Tre Rigby recovered a late fumble to seal the victory for the Wildcats.
The Bulldogs are 4-2 overall this season, and have gotten off to a 1-1 start in SWAC play. AAMU was victorious in its SWAC opener against Florida A&M, 40-21, before losing to Jackson State, 31-28, after holding a 21-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Alabama A&M has been strong on both sides of the ball, currently possessing a top-five offense and defense in the SWAC. They are scoring 34.2 points per game while allowing just 18.7 to opposing offenses.
The Bulldogs are known for their excellent passing game led by graduate quarterback Cornelious Brown IV. He currently sits second in the conference in completion percentage (64.4), passing yards (1572), and touchdowns (14).
Their run game has also been effective, averaging 164.7 rushing yards per game on 5.7 yards per carry. Byron Perrilliat and Kolton Nero each have over 40 carries and 200 yards from scrimmage.
Defensively, the Bulldogs rank second in the SWAC against the run and third against the pass. They have yet to allow a 100+ yard rusher this season and have allowed only five rushing touchdowns.
AAMU have received production from several players across the defensive unit. Arenza Davis leads the Bulldogs with 5.5 tackles for loss, while Kylon Roberts leads with 2.5 sacks. Jeremiah Hudson-Davis has intercepted two passes on the season and also paces the team in quarterback hurries (4).
BAMA BLUES
Bethune-Cookman has struggled mightily in the state of Alabama since joining the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2021.The Cats have never defeated either Alabama A&M or Alabama State on the road since joining the conference, last defeating a team in Alabama in 2003 in a neutral site game against Alabama State in Mobile. Over five games in the state of Alabama since 2021, B-CU has been outscored 162-112.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
After playing four of their first five games to open the 2026 season at the friendly confines of Daytona Stadium, the Wildcats will depart for Huntsville to kick off a stretch of five of their next seven away from home. With no true bye week on the year (B-CU was the only SWAC team to not have a week zero game), the Cats return home only twice more before the 2026 Florida Blue Florida Classic wraps up the regular season in Orlando.
STORM CHASERS
The potential impact of Hurricane Isaias in the forefront of Saturday's contest marks the third straight visit to Alabama A&M marred by extreme weather for B-CU. In 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in South Florida, bringing enough rain to close Bethune-Cookman's campus for over three weeks, stranding the football program on the road beginning with the trip to Alabama A&M on October 1, 2022. In 2024, it was Hurricane Milton that struck the state on the western shores, again disrupting travel plans ahead of the team's trip to Huntsville.
RUN WILD
Rashon Brown raced out for a historic performance against Alabama State on Saturday. He rushed 31 times for 260 yards and a touchdown. It is the most third-most rushing yards in a single-game for a Wildcat in program
history, surpassing Randy "Sweetback" Walker's 235 yards against Morris Brown in 1972. He ranks in the top 20 in the NCAA FCS ranks at rushing yards, yards per carry, and rushing touchdowns.
The Wildcats are 13-7-1 all time against the Bulldogs but are just 2-3 against them since joining the SWAC.
