JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Ospreys scored twice in the second inning and added another run in the fourth to defeat the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 3–1 on Wednesday night at the UNF Softball Complex.
North Florida (25-5) broke through in the second when Grace Shaw delivered a two-run single through the right side, scoring Hannah Davila and Ayden Allen for a 2-0 lead.
Bethune-Cookman (7-18) answered in the fourth. Janel Morrisey walked and moved to third on a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI groundout by Alana Cypress to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Ospreys responded in the bottom half of the inning. Kalyn McCarthy doubled down the left-field line, stole third and came home on a Bethune-Cookman fielding error to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Wildcats couldn't get anything going offensively the rest of the game. Bethune-Cookman was held to just three hits, with singles from Morrisey, Alyssa Gonzalez and Emma Bradley-Tse.
North Florida finished with 10 hits, including three from Allen and three from Addie Keef. McCarthy also had a double for the Ospreys.
Kate Peters (6-1) earned the win for the Ospreys in relief, tossing 3⅔ hitless innings while walking three and striking out one. Starter Taylor Cook allowed one run on three hits in 3⅓ innings.
Mia Gonzalez (4-9) took the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in four innings. Sofia Vollejos-Coleman worked two scoreless innings in relief.
The Wildcats return home for another weekend SWAC series, this time against the Alabama State Hornets. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Sunnyland Park.
