Abreu's Gem Pushes Wildcats Past Panthers in SWAC Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Harbersting Abreu delivered a dominant outing on the mound Friday night, striking out seven over seven shutout innings to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 6-1 win over Prairie View A&M in the SWAC opener at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Header How it Happened

Bethune-Cookman (12-6, 1-0) took the lead in the first inning. Erick Almonte drew a walk, moved into scoring position on a stolen base and throwing error, and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Jeter Polledo to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.

The Wildcats broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run inning. Almonte delivered an RBI single to center, Andrey Martinez followed with a run-scoring hit to left, and Maikol Lucena added another RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Wildcats added another run in the sixth when Almonte drove in Michael Rodriguez with his second RBI single of the night, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Prairie View A&M (4-12, 0-1) got on the board in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Ryland Duson, but the Wildcats answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly from Ruben Zuany that scored Rodriguez and made it 6-1.

Abreu scattered four hits and walked two while keeping Prairie View off the scoreboard during his outing. The right-hander faced consistent traffic early but worked out of jams to keep the Wildcats in control before handing the ball to the bullpen in the eighth.

David Morrissey worked the final two innings out of the bullpen for B-CU, allowing one run while striking out three to close out the victory.
