DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In a game that featured five lead changes, Jackson State managed the go-ahead run in the eighth and finished off a tight 8-7 victory over B-CU at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The loss was the Wildcat's first conference loss of the season.
Jackson State (13-14, 4-3) got on the board first, manufacturing a run on a double steal to take a 1-0 lead.
Bethune-Cookman (17-9, 6-1) quickly responded with a three-run inning to take the lead in the second, Michael Rodriguez clocked his first home run of the season to get the scoring started. A Jackson State error then allowed two more runners to score.
The Wildcats would generate another run in the fourth using a sacrifice bunt from Sergio Rivera to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Tigers fought back in the fifth with a four runs to retake the lead. Asafa Jones and Robert Tate Jr. each had RBI hits for JSU. Two B-CU errors proved costly as they allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.
The seesaw affair would continue in the sixth, with the Wildcats producing two more runs to grab a 6-5 lead. Erick Almonte hit an RBI double and later scored on a base hit by Darryl Lee.
In the seventh, the Tigers tied the game at six on a single by Pierre Cabral. And in the eighth inning, they took the lead on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.
Facing a two-run deficit, the Wildcats trimmed it to just one on another RBI hit from Erick Almonte. But the Jackson State bullpen shut the door from their, closing out the win for the Tigers. Kade Walker picked up his first save of the season.
- The two teams combined for seven errors and allowed four unearned runs.
- Harbersting Abreu pitched five innings, allowing three runs and recording six strikeout.
- The Wildcats out-hit the Tigers 11 to nine.
- B-CU pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.
- Erick Almonte went 4-for-4 with two RBI.
- Michael Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season.
