DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Andrey Martinez continues to be red-hot at the plate as he finished just a single away from the cycle and drove in four runs in a easy 14-4 victory over the Bulldogs at Sliwa Stadium.
Alabama A&M (8-32, 2-14) got the scoring started in the ballgame as Brycen Hammonds hit a two-run home run after the first batter was hit to give the Bulldogs the early 2-0 advantage.
Bethune-Cookman (27-11, 13-3) quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Maikol Lucena slapped a base hit to centerfield and came around to score on a misplay in the outfield to knot the game at two.
The Wildcats then put together a two-out rally in the second. Almonte led off the inning with a single and Christopher Watson drove him in on a base hit with two away. After a walk, Andrey Martinez came up with the biggest hit of the game, a three-run homer to left field to make it 6-2.
B-CU would pick up two more runs in the third. A hit batter and a single put runners at first and third, and Jose Fernandez would drive in both runners on a single to extend the lead to 8-2.
AAMU attempted to claw its way back into the game. They managed a run in the fifth after an error and a wild pitch allowed a runner to advance to third. He would score on a double play to cut the deficit to five.
In the sixth, Tarris Murray hit a double and scored on a base hit from Isaac Castro to put more pressure on B-CU.
But the Wildcats would put the game away during the following two innings. Martinez came up big again in the sixth with an RBI triple to make it 9-4. A wild pitch and a sac fly from Jeter Polledo put two more runs on the board for a seven-run B-CU cushion.
Michael Rodriguez would end the game in the seventh, scoring two runs on an RBI double to finish off the run rule victory.
