MONTGOMERY, ALA. – After falling just short to begin the double header, the Wildcats bounced back with a runaway 9-1 victory in game two to take the series over Alabama State at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Game 1: ASU 5, B-CU 4
Bethune-Cookman (17-6, 13-8) got the scoring started in the double header. The Wildcats loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batter before Kween Tauala and Jessica Alaan drove the runs in to give B-CU the 2-0 lead.
Alabama State (18-29, 11-9) cut the lead in half in the second. They began the inning with two singles and Sharon Parker hit a bunt single to put a run on the board.
The Hornets then took the lead in the fourth inning. After a leadoff triple, Bailee Williams hit a two-run home run to take a 3-2 lead. ASU would get another run on a RBI hit by Talee Sims to make it 4-2.
Neither team would score again until the sixth inning, when the Hornets added an important insurance run. Bailee Williams again came up big with an RBI double to extend the lead to three.
The Wildcats attempted to rally in the final inning, starting the frame by loading the bases with no outs. Jessica Alaan then managed a base hit to make it 5-3. With the bases still loaded, Zariah Billinger put the ball in play to score another run on a fielder's choice. The B-CU comeback ultimately came up short though as Amanda Cintron induced a strikeout and a groundout to seal the win for the Hornets.
Game 2: B-CU 9, ASU 1
The Wildcats once again scored first, managing four runs in the first inning. After an error allowed the leadoff runner to reach, Janel Morrisey collected an RBI knock for the first run. Alana Cypress later drove in another run on a base hit and Arianna Reynolds picked up two RBI on a single to make it 4-0.
Alabama State scored its only run in the second inning. Bailee Williams led off the frame with a solo shot to cut the deficit down to three.
B-CU would retake a four-run lead in the fourth. Emma Bradley-Tse reached on a single and scored on an error to make it 5-1.
Cypress collected another RBI in the fifth inning, hitting a double to left field with a runner on first to put B-CU up five.
The Wildcats would go on to score two more runs in the late innings, including one on a hit by Mia"Lani to put the game out of reach. Mia Gonzalez and Sofia Coleman teamed up to shut down the Hornets offense again, holding ASU to just one run on six hits.
