Header How it Happened

The Wildcats (35-16, 21-5) struck first in the second inning when Jose Fernandez launched a solo home run to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Alabama State (26-21, 16-10) answered in the bottom half of the inning as Trey Callaway connected on a solo home run to left center to even the score at 1-1.

Bethune-Cookman regained the lead in the third inning. Sergio Rivera reached on a bunt single before Darryl Lee doubled to center field to drive him in and make it 2-1.

The Hornets responded again in the fourth inning. Niguel Jenkins tied the game with a solo home run before Alabama State took advantage of a Bethune-Cookman error later in the frame to grab a 3-2 advantage.

The Wildcats immediately came through with a three-run fifth inning. Rivera singled to begin the rally before Lee worked a walk and Andrey Martinez delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Michael Rodriguez followed with an RBI single of his own before Maikol Lucena added an RBI groundout to give Bethune-Cookman a 5-3 lead.

B-CU added insurance in the ninth inning. Rivera singled once again before Lee doubled to put runners in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Rivera to score before Lucena lined an RBI double to right center to extend the advantage to 7-3.

Harbersting Abreu earned the win after allowing three runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Jean Zambrano tossed four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save, allowing just one hit while striking out four.
