Shelton Gaffney

Shelton Gaffney, who spent three years with the University of Tennessee football team, two years with the Temple University football team, two years at High Point University working with
women’s lacrosse, baseball, men’ soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s lacrosse and men’s basketball as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. One year with the
Colorado State University football team. Two years coaching football and strength and conditioning at the high school level in the state of Georgia. One year at Florida International
University as assistant strength and conditioning coach working with the football, women’ssoccer, and dive teams is starting his first year as director of strength and conditioning for
football here at Bethune-Cookman University.

Prior to coming to coming to BCU, Gaffney was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Florida International University working with football, women’s soccer and dive teams.
Before his time at FIU Gaffney was the head strength and conditioning coach and defensive ends coach at Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Ga. While at Prince Gaffney
coordinated strength and conditioning programs for all varsity sports and students taking strength and conditioning as an elective. Gaffney also spent time as a linebackers coach,
running backs coach, and special teams coordinator at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, Ga.

While as an assistant at Colorado State University Gaffney worked with the CSU football team assisting in the training and implementation of the football strength and conditioning program. Gaffney also worked as a liaison for the strength and conditioning department helping coordinate efforts between the strength and conditioning department athletic training and
nutrition departments.

At High Point University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach Gaffney trained the women’s lacrosse, baseball, men’ soccer, and men’s and women’s track and field teams.
Helping lead women’s lacrosse to back to back Big South championships as well as back to back NCAA tournament appearances and a top 20 finish. Baseball to a Big South tournament
Championship game appearance. Men’s soccer to back to back Big South regular seasonconference championships and an NCAA tournament appearance. He also assisted in the
training of the HPU men’s basketball and lacrosse teams.

Prior to his stint at High Point University Gaffney spent two seasons 2013-2014 assisting in the training of the Temple University football team. Gaffney joined the Owls after two years as a strength and conditioning coach at Johnny Long’s Training Academy in Knoxville, TN. Where he oversaw the development of football athletes as well as trained high school athletes and current professional athletes in various sports. Prior to working at Johnny Long’s Training Academy, Gaffney was an assistant strength and
conditioning coach at Tennessee from 2008-10. He worked with various sports specifically
football & track and field.

Gaffney started in the strength and conditioning profession in the spring of 2007 while at his alma mater, Western Carolina. While at Western, he served as an apprentice in the weight room and then went on to serve as an intern at Tennessee in the summer of 2007. That fall the Vols became the SEC East champions.
 
Gaffney was a four-year letter winner at Western Carolina University where he played linebacker for the Catamounts. He was a key contributor on defense as well as on special
teams earning a role as a team captain his senior year for the Catamounts. Gaffney earned abachelor’s degree in sport management with an emphasis in exercise science in 2007.
While at Tennessee he completed a master's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sport psychology in 2010. Coach Gaffney is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), USA Weightlifting Level-2 (USAW-2), USA Track & Field Level 1 (USAT&F-1), and Reflexive Performance Reset Level 1 (RPR-1).
