Wildcats Drop 53-39 Decision to Delaware State

Jan. 29, 2007

Final Stats

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Raquel Collier and Ashlee Burbage combined for 25 points on Monday night in order to help Delaware State ease past Bethune-Cookman College, 53-39, in a women's basketball conference match-up at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Bethune-Cookman (4-15, 1-8 MEAC) was held to their lowest first half point production of the season (11) as they looked up at the wrong end of a 34-11 score at the break.

Meanwhile, Delaware State (10-10, 5-4 MEAC) had little trouble stymieing the Wildcats offense with a blistering defense and an offensive assault from their "one-two" punch of Collier and Burbage. Trailing 6-5 with 14:56 remaining in the half, the Lady Hornets of DSU went on a searing 27-5 run to end the half. Thus, limiting the `Cats to just two (2) lay-ups, both by MEAC Player of the Year candidate Tristan McCray, the rest of the way.

B-CC's Traci Fountain threw in a free throw to try and cut the `Cats bleeding midway through the half.

Collier and Burbage had already done the damage with 10 points each, respectively, but the `Cats didn't help their own cause as they missed seven (7) wide-open lay-ups ... two of which occurred in transition situations behind the DSU defense.

The second half remained pretty-much the same for both teams as the Lady Hornets kept the pressure on with Selena Galloway and Katreem Palmer getting into the mix in the scoring column.

Fountain's three-pointer late in the game, as well as a driving shot from senior point guard Sabrina Boykin, broke the 20-point advantage for the Lady Hornets to get B-CC to within 14 at the end. That, however, is how things ended with the Wildcats on the losing end of their sixth consecutive contest.

DSU was led on the night by Collier with a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Burbage added 10 points to reach double figures, as well as collecting three rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

B-CC was paced by Fountain with a season-high tying performance of 11 points. Also hitting double figures in scoring was senior forward Cassandra Calcagno with 10 points and six rebounds of her own off the glass.

The `Cats now head back on the road for a grueling stretch in which they will play five straight road games over the course of the next two weeks. Their first stops in the tour will be at Hampton and Norfolk State, beginning next weekend with the Pirates of HU on Saturday, Feb. 3. The game begins at 4 p.m. inside the HU Convocation Center in Hampton, Va.
