Daytona Beach, Fla. -
Bethune-Cookman University will enter the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament with a #7-seed after finishing the conference season with a record of 5-9. This marks the first time in the new millennium that B-CU has been ranked out of the top five in the final regular season conference standings.
B-CU (21-34) has drawn the second-seeded Norfolk State University who completed their conference season with a 13-1 record. Their only loss came to cross-bridge rival Hampton during the MEAC Round-Up in Lexington, S.C.
The Wildcats dropped both contests to the Spartans earlier in the year ... marking the first time in school history the `Cats were be felled by their conference foes from Virginia.
The annual end-of-year tournament is taking place on May 11-13 at the Randazzo Softball Park in Severn, Md. The city is located just minutes away from the beautiful downtown harbor area of Baltimore, Md.
B-CU and Norfolk State will hook up on Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m. in the Game #2 of the tournament. The winner of that game will return to Randazzo Park later in the evening [7:00] to face the winner of Game #4--Florida A&M (#6) vs. Delaware State (#3).
The loser, however, will move into the loser's bracket to face-off against the loser of Game #1 which pits top-seeded Hampton against #8-seeded Morgan State at 3:30 pm. This will mark the first exit for someone from the tournament.
B-CU may be an underdog in the seedings, but two players are batting above .400 for the Wildcats in the form of Christina Trimble [.420] and Brandi Holley, Breanna Shaw and Shaterra Davis all are seeing the ball well lately with a .300-average or above.
Senior Andrea Thomas leads the `Cats behind the dish as the catcher, while she has slid down the batting charts a bit as of late with a .295 average. That, however, should not fool anyone as Thomas has some of the best powers numbers in B-CU history, and looks to break out against the MEAC in her last conference tournament.
