Women's Golf Wins Bash at the Beach Tournament

Daytona Beach, Fla. - The women's golf team for Bethune-Cookman University finished atop the heap on Sunday as they shot a two-day total of 595 to win by six strokes at the Daytona Beach Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. The event was hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Jackson State's Shasta Averyhardt earned the individual medalist honor, but it was the Wildcats of B-CU taking home the team top prize after firing a 595 (+27) for the two-day event.

B-CU senior Becky Dowell shot a team-best 144 overall as she fired rounds of 70 and 74, respectively. That earned the senior golfer a fourth place finish overall for the event. For Dowell, this is her fourth time this year (2007-08) finishing amongst the top five individual golfers. Behind her was teammate Fern Grimshaw withy a tie for sixth place overall.

Grimshaw turned in a scorecard of 71 and 76 for a total of 146 for the event. Also finishing in the top 10 was freshman Kim Wong with a scorecard of 149 (72 and 77). Wong finished in a tie alongside Embry-Riddle's Tara Allen at 10th place.

Fellow B-CU golfers Maria Urquiola also finished well for the Wildcats.

This marks the fifth time this season that B-CU has finished atop the charts for women's golf in a tournament. Their last first place finish came back on Feb. 23-24 when they hosted the annual the B-CU Spring Invitational in Daytona Beach.

Jackson State finished second overall behind the play of top golfer Shasta Averyhardt. The Tigers were followed by Birmingham Southern in third place, as well as a tie at fourth place between Embry-Riddle and Seminole Community College.

B-CU will hit the links again on Apr. 25-27 when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to try and defend their back-to-back Women in Golf Foundation trophy championship.
