DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The LadyCats earned a strong-armed win over NCAA Independent, Savannah State, Tuesday night at Moore Gymnasium. The victory makes the third in the last four matches for Bethune-Cookman, as they won tonight 3-0 in games of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-9.
What started out looking like it might be a close game, turned into a blowout as the LadyCats went on a scoring run that created a seven point lead. B-CU carried their strong lead through and finished the game winning by nine points, at 25-16. Although LadyCats carried momentum into the second game, the Lady Tigers made it clear that they were not prepared to simply lay down, taking an early lead in the game. Bethune-Cookman remained focused and worked into their groove, tying the score at six. After taking a 9-8 lead in the game, the LadyCats never looked back in the game or the set, winning the second game 25-14.
In the third game, the LadyCats came out like a team on the mission to put SSU away. At the service of Shakhea Moore-Hagins, B-CU went on an 8-1 scoring run, including three consecutive service aces by Moore-Hagins. Bethune-Cookman went on to hold SSU to a mere nine points in the game, making an average of 13 points allowed in each game of the match.
Leading the LadyCats on both offense and defense in the match tonight, freshman Chelle Ticeson tallying 8 kills, followed by Sydney Smith each with 7.
Following Gardner on defense, Shakhea Moore Hagins finished with 6 digs and 4 service aces. Daryl Rodriguez notched 5 digs and led B-CU in assists with 20, followed by Julie Gibson with 16 assists.
The LadyCats (3-9) are starting to build up momentum as they gear up for MEAC season. Up next for B-CU is a rematch at home with Jacksonville, 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1 at Moore Gymnasium.
