'CAT CHRONICLES: Williams' 3-Pick Evens Him With Teammate Smith... Like That Matters

BALTIMORE, Md.  -- No road worries for Bethune-Cookman Saturday. In the first road game of the Brian Jenkins era, all the Wildcats did was rack up 640 yards against the nation's second-ranked FCS  defense, force eight turnovers and  eclipse a 60-year old school record for most points away from home.

The 69-32 victory over Morgan State gave the Wildcats their first 4-0 start since 2003 and a 2-0 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference a half-game behind early leader Hampton.

B-CU's always played well at Morgan State, winning five times in its past six trips to Hughes Stadium.  This, however, was historic, in that it erased the 1950's team record for most road points. That team beat Edward Waters 67-0.

"We're not into stats or records," said Jenkins. "We're just focused on running our offense and playing Wildcat football."

Morgan State (2-3, 1-1) entered the game giving up just 205.75 yards a game. B-CU had that midway through the second quarter.

Matt Johnson set the tone for a high-scoring day when he connected with Eddie Poole on a 70-yard strike on the first play from scrimmage. For the second straight week, the senior posted a career-high passing yardage total (261) in addition to 55 yards and a score on the ground.

"We tried to come out and show this was our game," Johnson said. "This would be the  tempo we would play at. We established that early and often."

That score to Poole would be the only Wildcat passing touchdown of the day. While Johnson would complete his first eight passes (the ninth was dropped) and finish 13 of 18, B-CU's running game was just as effective.

Androse Bell (69 yards, 2 TD) combined for five rushing touchdowns and Isidore Jackson ran for 101 yards for B-CU, which gained 366 yards on the ground.

"It can be any given moment when your time is called," said Lovette. "When that moment comes, you have to do what you do. All of us have the talent. If we do our alignment, assignment and technique, everything has to be good."

The Bears registered only two of their four touchdowns via offense. The other two came in a wild second quarter where the teams combined to score 51 points.

B-CU stormed out to a 35-3 second quarter lead before Morgan State rallied back to a 42-26 deficit at halftime. The Bears scored 16 points in a 22-second span as David Brown's two-yard run and Nico Scott's 44-yard interception return along with a pair of two-point conversions brought the Bears within two scores.

Ryan Lewis helped B-CU regain control by forcing a fumble, picking it up and returning it 33 yards for a touchdown in the opening minute of the third quarter.  The defense forced four consecutive turnovers while the offense rebuilt its 30-point lead.

It was one of eight turnovers forced by the Wildcat defense, with two of those directly leading to Wildcat scores.

Bobbie Williams in 2006 to register a three-pick game while Arkee Smith added another.  In addition to Lewis, Williams, Tavaris Bell and Andrew Bell each recovered a fumble. Reggie Sandilands had six tackles.

"I'm very ecstatic about the defensive effort," Jenkins said. "It was a totally family effort."

Troy Dannehower finished the game with fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns.

Bethune-Cookman hosts Delaware State for homecoming next Saturday at 4 p.m.

NOTES: Pat Brown finished with 5 catches for 79 yards ... Sven Hurd's PAT streak ended at 28 when the final PAT of the night went awry due to a bad snap ... The Johnson pick was his first of the season ... The 640 total yards was the nation's best single-game FCS total of the season for a couple of hours until Montana State finished with 646 against Sacramento State later in the night; B-CU has two of the five 600-yard games in FCS this season.
